ibex
Any of several species of surefooted, sturdy wild goats found in the mountains of Europe, Asia, and NE Africa. Ibex are typically about 3 ft (90 cm) tall at the shoulder and have brownish gray fur that is darker on the underparts. The male has a beard and large, semicircular horns.


urea
One of the simplest organic compounds and the first synthesized from inorganic raw materials (see inorganic compound), by Friedrich W\u00f6 hler (1800-1882) in 1828. It is the diamide of carbonic acid (H2NCONH2; see amide, carbon dioxide). The chief nitrogenous end product of protein breakdown in mammals and some fishes, it occurs not only in urine but also in blood, bile, milk, and perspiration. It is one of the industrial chemicals produced in largest quantities. With its high nitrogen content and low price, it is a major agricultural fertilizer and animal-feed ingredient. It is also used to make urea-formaldehyde plastics (incl. foamed plastics; see polyurethanes), as well as to synthesize barbiturates, as a stabilizer in explosives, and in adhesives, hydrocarbon processing, and flameproofing.


Urey
U.S. scientist. Born in Walkerton, Ind., he received his doctorate from the Univ. of California at Berkeley and thereafter taught at various universities. He was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1934 for discovering deuterium and heavy water. He was a key figure in the development of the atomic bomb; his group worked on the gaseous diffusion process for separation of uranium-235. He devised methods for estimating the temperature of ancient oceans, theorized on the compositions of primordial atmospheres, and studied the relative abundances of the elements, making fundamental contributions to a widely accepted theory of the origin of the earth and other planets (in The Planets, 1952).


Ute
Shoshonean-speaking group of Amer. Indians traditionally inhabiting W Colorado and E Utah (whose name derives from Ute). Until the 19th cent., the Ute had no horses and lived in small family clusters, subsisting by food collecting. They were virtually indistinguishable from the Southern Paiute. After acquiring horses they became organized as loose bands of hunters, often targeting livestock. After the Indian wars of 1864-70 most Ute were settled on reservations. Today they number about 5,000.


Abuja
City (pop., 1995 est.: 423,000), federal capital of Nigeria. Construction of the city, at a site chosen for its central location and healthful climate about 300 mi (480 km) northwest of Lagos, began in 1976 under the architect K. Tange. It officially replaced Lagos as capital in 1991.
