lift
Upward-acting force on an aircraft wing or airfoil. An aircraft in flight experiences an upward lift force, as well as the thrust of the engine, the force of its own weight, and a drag force. The lift force arises because the speed at which the displaced air moves over the top of the airfoil (and over the top of the attached boundary layer) is greater than the speed at which it moves over the bottom and because the pressure acting on the airfoil from below is therefore greater than the pressure from above.
tilth
Physical condition of soil, especially in relation to its suitability for planting or growing a crop. Factors that determine tilth include the formation and stability of aggregated soil particles, moisture content, degree of aeration, rate of water infiltration, and drainage. The tilth of a soil can change rapidly, depending on environmental factors such as changes in moisture. The objective of tillage (mechanical manipulation of the soil) is to improve tilth, thereby increasing crop production; in the long term, however, conventional tillage, especially plowing, often has the opposite effect, causing the soil to break down and become compacted.
tit
Any of several woodland and garden songbird species in the genus Parus (family Paridae) having a rather stout, pointed bill. The great tit (P. major), found in Europe, NW Africa, and Asia nearly to Java, is about 6 in. (14 cm) long. It has a white face, a black head, and a black center line on its underparts, which are yellow or buffy. The best-known N. Amer. species of crested tit is the tufted titmouse (P. bicolor), a 7-in. (17-cm) bluish gray bird with pinkish brown flanks. See also chickadee.
Diet
Japanese national legislature. Under the Meiji Constitution, the Diet had two houses, a House of Peers and a House of Representatives, with coequal powers. Its powers were largely negative: it could block legislation and veto budgets. Under the U.S.-sponsored constitution of 1947, the (upper) House of Councillors seats 252 members (100 at-large and 152 prefectural); the (lower) House of Representatives has 500 members. The prime minister, who leads the majority party in the lower house, must be a member.
Dietz
U.S. songwriter. Born in New York City, he studied at Columbia Univ. and later joined an advertising agency, where he designed the trademark roaring lion for Goldwyn Pictures (later MGM). He joined the studio in 1919 and became director of advertising, a post he retained until 1957. From 1923 he wrote lyrics in his spare time. In 1929 he met the composer Arthur Schwartz (1900-1984); the duo established their reputation with The Little Show and went on to write such Broadway shows as Three's a Crowd (1930), The Band Wagon (1931), Flying Colors (1932), Revenge with Music (1934), At Home Abroad (1935), Inside U.S.A.
