Possible definitions for thant

ant
Any member of approximately 8,000 species of the social insect family Formicidae. Ants are found worldwide but are especially common in hot climates. They range from 0.1 to 1 in. (2-25 mm) long and are usually yellow, brown, red, or black. Ants eat both plant and animal substances; some even "farm" fungi for food, cultivating them in their nests, or "milk" aphids. Ant colonies consist of three castes (queens, males, and workers, incl. soldiers) interacting in a highly complex society paralleling that of the honeybees. Well-known ant species are the carpenter ants of N. America, the voracious army ants of tropical America, and the stinging fire ant.

Avanti
Historic kingdom, N India. Located on the overland trade routes between N and S India, it lay within present-day Madhya Pradesh. Its capital was at Ujjain. It flourished in the 6th-4th cent. BC as one of the great powers of N India. In the 4th cent. BC it was conquered and annexed by Candra Gupta Maurya of Magadha. Ujjain, one of the seven holy cities of Hinduism, was renowned for its beauty and wealth; it also became a center of early Buddhism and Jainism.

bhakti
S Asian devotional movement, particularly in Hinduism, emphasizing the love of a devotee for his or her personal god. In contrast to Advaita, bhakti assumes a dualistic relationship between devotee and deity. Though Vishnu, Shiva, and Shakti (see shakti) all have cults, bhakti characteristically developed around Vishnu's incarnations as Rama and Krishna. Practices include reciting the god's name, singing hymns, wearing his emblem, and making pilgrimages. The fervor of S. Indian hymnists in the 7th-10th cent. spread bhakti and inspired much poetry and art. Poets such as Mirabai conceived of the relationship between the worshiper and the god in familiar human terms (e.g., the lover and beloved), while more abstract poets such as Kabir and Nanak portrayed the divinity as singular and ineffable.

chancre
Primary sore or ulcer at the site of entry of a pathogen; specifically, the typical skin lesion of primary infectious syphilis. In women, it is often internal and may go unnoticed. This single red papule (bump), usually occurring about three weeks after infection, and painless regional lymph-node swelling are the major signs of early-stage syphilis. Identification of Treponema pallidum in its fluid makes the diagnosis. The chancre heals in two to six weeks, but syphilis progresses unless treated with penicillin.

Chanel
French fashion designer. Little is known of her early life. In 1913 she opened a millinery shop in Deauville, and within five years her innovative use of jersey fabric and accessories was attracting wealthy patrons.
