Aeneas
Mythical hero of Troy and Rome. He was the son of Aphrodite and Anchises, a member of Trojan royal family. According to Homer, he was second only to his cousin Hector in defending Troy during the Trojan War. Virgil's Aeneid tells of Aeneas's escape after Troy's fall, carrying his elderly father on his back, and of his journey to Italy, where his descendants became the rulers of Rome. See also Dido.


Cenis
Massif and pass, Alps. Located in SE France west of Turin, Italy, the pass was an invasion route from earliest times and is traversed by a road 24 mi (38 km) long, built by Napoleon in 1803-10. The road climbs to Mt. Cenis Pass (elevation 6,834 ft, or 2,083 m) and passes between two peaks more than 8,000 ft (2,500 m) high. The Mt. Cenis railway tunnel, 8.5 mi (14 km) long, was the first great tunnel through the Alps (opened 1871). The road tunnel, 10 mi (16 km) long, opened in 1980.


Denis
Patron saint of France and first bishop of Paris. Probably born in Rome, he was one of seven bishops sent to convert the people of Gaul during the reign of Decius. Little is known of his life; he is believed to have been martyred during the persecutions of the emperor Valerian. A 9th-cent. legend says that he was beheaded on Montmartre and that his decapitated body carried his head to the area northeast of Paris where the Benedictine abbey of St. Denis was founded.


ENIAC
Early electronic digital computer built in the U.S. in 1945 by P. Eckert and J. Mauchly. The massive ENIAC, which weighed 30 tons and filled an entire room, used some 18,000 vacuum tubes, 70,000 resistors, and 10,000 capacitors. In December 1945 it solved its first problem, calculations for the hydrogen bomb. After its official unveiling in 1946, it was used to prepare artillery-shell trajectory tables and perform other military and scientific calculations.


genius
Person of extraordinary intellectual power. The genius displays originality, creativity, and the ability to think and work in areas not previously explored. Though geniuses have usually left their unique mark in a particular field, studies have shown that the general intelligence of geniuses is also exceptionally high. Genius appears to be a function of both hereditary and environmental factors. See also gifted child.

In ancient Roman religion, the attendant spirit of a person or place. It originally represented the housefather, who gave continuity to a family or clan over generations; its female counterpart was the housemother, called the juno. In later times, the genius was seen as an individual's guardian spirit or higher self, and it was worshiped by that individual, especially on his birthday. There were also genii of places and of groups such as legions, states, and guilds.
