Mulroney
Prime minister of Canada (1984-93). Born in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, he grew up bilingual in English and French. A lawyer in Montreal from 1965, he served on a commission to investigate crime in Quebec's construction industry (1974). He was president of the Iron Ore Co. 1977-83. Elected leader of the Progressive Conservative Party in 1983, he became prime minister when the party won a majority over the Liberals in 1984. He created a coalition of Quebec nationalists and W conservatives and advocated unification while recognizing Quebec as a "distinct society." He sought U.S. cooperation on acid rain and trade policies and helped negotiate the N. Amer. Free Trade Agreement. He retired from politics in 1993.

Silone
Italian novelist, short-story writer, and political leader. A founder of the Italian Communist party in 1921, he was active in the party until the fascists drove him into exile. In 1930 he settled in Switzerland, became disillusioned with communism, and began to write antifascist works. He became internationally famous with his first novel, Fontamara (1930), which was followed by the novels Bread and Wine (1937) and The Seed Beneath the Snow (1940) and the satire The School for Dictators (1938). After World War II he returned to Italian politics before retiring to write such works as A Handful of Blackberries (1952).

Suetonius
Roman biographer and antiquarian. Suetonius' family was of the knightly class. His writings include De viris illustribus ("Concerning Illustrious Men"), short biographies of literary figures that were the ultimate source of nearly all that is known about the lives of eminent Roman authors. Lives of the Caesars, his other major work, is seasoned with bits of gossip and scandal related to the first 11 emperors; it is largely responsible for the vivid picture of Roman society and its decadent leaders that dominated historical thought until modified in modern times by the discovery of nonliterary evidence.
