set
In mathematics and logic, any collection of objects (elements), which may be mathematical (e.g., numbers, functions) or not. The intuitive idea of a set is probably even older than that of number. Members of a herd of animals, for example, could be matched with stones in a sack without members of either set actually being counted. The notion extends into the infinite. For example, the set of integers from 1 to 100 is finite, whereas the set of all integers is infinite. A set is commonly represented as a list of all its members enclosed in braces. A set with no members is called an empty, or null, set, and is denoted . Because an infinite set cannot be listed, it is usually represented by a formula that generates its elements when applied to the elements of the set of counting numbers. Thus, represents the set of positive even numbers (the vertical bar means "such that").

smelt
Any of certain slender, silvery, carnivorous, food fishes (family Osmeridae) having a small fleshy fin. Smelts live in cold N seas, and most species spawn a short distance upstream. The Amer. smelt (Osmerus mordax), introduced from the Atlantic to the Great Lakes, is the largest smelt, about 15 in. (38 cm) long. The European smelt (O. eperlanus) is similar. Among Pacific species are the rainbow herring, capelin, and eulachon, or candlefish, which is so oily at spawning time that it can be dried and burned as a candle. Silversides (see grunion) and other unrelated fishes are sometimes called smelts.

spelt
Subspecies (Triticum aestivum spelta) of wheat that has lax spikes and spikelets containing two light-red kernels.Triticum dicoccon was cultivated by the ancient Babylonians and the ancient Swiss lakedwellers; it is now grown for livestock forage and used in baked goods and cereals.

START
Negotiations between the U.S. and the Soviet Union aimed at reducing those countries' nuclear arsenals and delivery systems. Two sets of negotiations (1982-83, 1985-91) concluded in an agreement signed by G. Bush and M. Gorbachev committing the Soviet Union to a reduction from 11,000 to 8,000 nuclear weapons, and the U.S. to a reduction from 12,000 to 10,000. After the Soviet Union's collapse (1991), a supplementary agreement (1992) obligated Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakstan to either destroy the nuclear weapons on their soil or give them to Russia. Today, U.S. support for developing antimissile defenses threatens new complications for the arms control regime. See also SALT.

stealth
Any military technology intended to make vehicles or missiles nearly invisible to enemy radar or other electronic detection. Research in antidetection technology began soon after radar was invented. In World War II, the Germans coated their U-boat snorkels with radar-absorbent material. In the postwar era, researchers sought to learn the nature of radar echoes, beams of electromagnetic radiation bounced off ...
