French playwright and librettist. He wrote some 350 dramas, most of which proved extremely successful, and became the most popular opera librettist of his time. His librettos include G. Rossini's Le comte Ory (1828), V. Bellini's La sonnambula (1831), G. Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore (1832), G. Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots (1836), and G. Verdi's Les vê pres siciliennes (1855).
