Saba
Island (pop., 1990: 1,100) of the Netherlands Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. It lies 16 mi (26 km) northwest of St. Eustatius, with which it forms the Lesser Antilles. It has an area of 5 sq mi (13 sq km) and is the peak of an extinct volcano, Mt. Scenery. It was settled by the Dutch in 1632, but its inaccessibility and ruggedness prevented it from achieving economic importance and it was often a buccaneers' stronghold. The economy depends heavily on tourism.

Sarah
In the Old Testament, the wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac. She was childless until age 90. In Genesis, God promised Abraham that she would be "a mother of nations," but Sarah refused to believe, and had already given her maidservant Hagar to Abraham, with whom he fathered Ishmael. Nevertheless, Sarah did conceive in her old age and give birth to Abraham's son Isaac.

cabaret
Restaurant that serves liquor and offers light musical entertainment. The cabaret originated in France in the 1880s as a small club that presented amateur acts and satiric skits lampooning bourgeois conventions. The first German Kabarett was opened in Berlin c.1900 by Baron Ernst von Wolzogen and accompanied its musical acts with biting political satire. It became the center for underground political and literary expression and a showcase for the works of such social critics as B. Brecht and K. Weill, a decadent but fertile artistic milieu later portrayed in the musical Cabaret (1966). The English cabaret derived from concerts given in city taverns in the 18th-19th cent. and evolved into the music hall. In the U.S., the cabaret developed into the nightclub, where comedians, singers, or musicians performed. Small jazz and folk clubs and, later, comedy clubs evolved from the original cabaret.

Calah
Ancient city, Assyria. Lying south of modern Mosul, Iraq, it was founded in the 13th cent. BC by Shalmaneser I. It remained unimportant until Ashurnasirpal II chose it in the 9th cent. BC as the capital of Assyria and his royal seat. It was the site of a religious building founded in 798 BC by Queen Sammu-remat (Semiramis of Greek legend). Excavations there have yielded thousands of carved ivories from the 9th-8th cent. BC.

Fatah
Inverted acronym of Harakat al-Tahrir al-Watani al-Filastini (Palestine National Liberation Movement), which also means "opening" in Arabic. It was founded by Y. Arafat and Khalil al-Wazir in the late 1950s to free Palestine from Israeli control through guerrilla warfare. It eventually became the biggest group within the Palestine Liberation Organization and attacked Israeli interests worldwide. Originally based in Damascus, it moved its headquarters several times under pressure from sympathizers and foes alike. It gave up terrorism in 1993 when Arafat agreed to enter into talks with Israel for a political settlement of Palestinian issues.
