Sabine
British (Irish) astronomer and geodesist. He accompanied the expeditions of John Ross (1818) and William Parry (1819) in search of the Northwest Passage. In 1821 he began experiments to determine the earth's shape more precisely by observing the motion of a pendulum. He thereafter devoted most of his efforts to researches on terrestrial magnetism, overseeing the establishment of magnetic observatories throughout the world. In 1852 he discovered that the periodic variation of sunspots is correlated with certain changes in magnetic disturbances. He was president of London's Royal Society 1861-71. Knighted in 1869, he was promoted to the rank of general in 1870.
Saladin
Kurdish sultan of Egypt, Syria, Yemen, and Palestine and founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. Though as a youth he preferred religious to military studies, he began his military career under his uncle. On his uncle's death Saladin ordered Shawar, the powerful vizier of the Egyptian Fatimid dynasty, assassinated, and became vizier of Egypt. In 1171 he abolished the Shiite Fatimid caliphate and announced a return to Sunni Islam. From 1174, as sultan of Egypt and Syria, he succeeded in uniting Egypt, Syria, N Mesopotamia, and Palestine. His reputation as a generous and virtuous but firm ruler rekindled Muslim resistance to the crusaders. In 1187, turning his full strength against the Latin crusader kingdoms, he retook Jerusalem from the crusaders after 88 years. Whereas the Christian conquest had been marked by slaughter, Saladin's troops demonstrated courteous and civilized behavior. His victory deeply shocked the West and led to the call for the Third Crusade (1189-92), which matched him against Richard I; their stalemate resulted in a peace that gave the crusaders only a small strip of land from Tyre to Yafo (Jaffa). Saladin is considered one of the greatest of Muslim heroes.
sardine
Any of certain species of small (6-12 in., or 15-30 cm, long) food fishes of the herring family (Clupeidae), especially in the genera Sardina, Sardinops, and Sardinella. The common herring (Clupea harengus) is found throughout the N. Atlantic. The five species of Sardinops live in the Pacific and Indian oceans. Sardines are small, silvery, slender fishes with a single short dorsal fin and no scales on the head. They live in dense schools, migrating along the coast. They are usually fished with an encircling net, particularly the purse seine, and mainly at night, when they surface to feed on plankton. See also pilchard, sprat.
