lovage
Herb (Levisticum officinale) of the parsley family, native to S Europe. It is cultivated for its stalks and foliage, which are used for tea, as a vegetable, and to flavor foods. Its rhizomes are used as a carminative, and the seeds are used for flavoring desserts. Oil obtained from the flowers is used in perfumery.
mirage
In optics, the deceptive appearance of a distant object caused by the bending of light rays (refraction) in layers of air of varying density. Under certain conditions, such as over a stretch of pavement or desert air heated by intense sunshine, the air cools rapidly with elevation and therefore increases in density and refractive power. Sunlight reflected down from the upper portion of an object will be directed through the cool air in the normal way; although the light would not be seen ordinarily because of the angle, it curves upward after it enters the rarefied hot air near the ground, thus being refracted to the observer's eye as though it had originated below the heated surface. When the sky is the object of the mirage, the land is mistaken for a lake or sheet of water.
Remagen
Town (pop., 1992 est.: 15,000), W Germany. Located on the left bank of the Rhine River, southeast of Bonn, it originated as a Roman fortress and still has Roman remains. In World War II its railroad bridge was the site where Allied troops forced a crossing of the Rhine (1945) for the first time in the war.
silage
Forage plants such as corn, legumes, and grasses that have been harvested at early maturity, finely chopped, packed tightly to exclude air, and stored in tower silos, pits, or trenches. Properly stored silage ferments slightly and keeps for several months. It is used as animal feed.
triage
Division of patients for priority of care, usually into three categories: those who will not survive even with treatment; those who will survive without treatment; and those whose survival depends on treatment. If triage is applied, the treatment of patients requiring it is not delayed by useless or unnecessary treatment of those in the other groups. Triage originated in military medicine, when limited resources faced many wounded soldiers. It is used in civilian settings during disasters or epidemics, and in emergency rooms. Triage decisions are made after relatively quick examination; patients in lower-priority groups should be reexamined periodically.
