Limousin
Historical region, central France. Originally inhabited by the ancient Gallic tribe of Lemovices, it was conquered by Rome c.50 BC. Under the Carolingians, it was part of Aquitaine. On Eleanor of Aquitaine's marriage to the English king Henry II in 1152, it passed to English control. Subsequently fought over by England and France, it was finally annexed to the French crown under the French king Henry IV.


Cixous
French feminist critic, novelist, and playwright. Reared in Algiers, she has taught principally at the Univ. of Paris. Her essays, in collections such as The Newly Born Woman (1975; with Catherine Clé ment), explore issues of sexual difference and female experience in writing. The Book of Promethea (1983) and other works reinterpret myths and the mythic past and analyze Western representations of women. Her novels include Inside (1969) and Reading with Clarice Lispector (1989).


Primus
U.S. (Trinidad-born) dancer, choreographer, and anthropologist. She lived in New York City from age 2. She made her dance debut as the first black member of the New Dance Group in 1943 and formed her own company the next year. Her performances drew on the African-Amer. experience and on her own anthropological research in Africa and the Caribbean. Such works as African Ceremonial (1944) and The Wedding (1961) reflect the interests that also led her to obtain a PhD from Columbia Univ.
