Possible definitions for ribiers

rabies
Acute, usually fatal infectious disease of warm-blooded animals that attacks the central nervous system. It is spread by contact with an infected animal's saliva, usually from a bite. The rhabdovirus that causes it spreads along nerve tissue from the wound to the brain. Symptoms usually appear four to six weeks later, often beginning with irritability and aggressiveness. Wild animals lose their fear of humans but are easily provoked to bite, as are pets. Depression and paralysis soon follow. Death usually comes three to five days after symptoms begin. In humans, death can result from a seizure in the early phase even before symptoms of central-nervous-system depression develop. One name for rabies, hydrophobia ("fear of water"), comes from painful throat contraction on trying to swallow. If not treated in time (within a day or two) with a serum containing antibodies and then a series of vaccinations, rabies in humans is almost always fatal. Immediate cleansing of animal bites with soap and water can remove much of the virus.

Ribera
Spanish painter and printmaker. Though born in Spain, where he is said to have trained under F. Ribalta, he spent most of his life in Naples (then a Spanish possession). Most of his works are of religious subjects. Dramatic light and shadow and sometimes horrific detail emphasize the mental and physical suffering of penitent or martyred saints, as in The Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew (c.1630). In later works his modeling is softer, his colors are richer, and he demonstrates strong human sympathy, as in The Clubfooted Boy (1642). His etchings are among the finest produced in Italy and Spain in the baroque period.

Riviera
Coastal region bordering on the Mediterranean Sea in SE France and NW Italy. It extends from Cannes, France, to La Spezia, Italy. The Italian Riviera is divided into the Riviera di Ponente west of Genoa and the Riviera di Levante east of Genoa. The French Riviera is also called the Cô te d'Azur. Noted for its scenery and pleasant climate, it is one of the major tourist centers of Europe. Because of its mild winters, many delicate plants flourish there, and flowers are grown out of season for export to N markets. See also Cannes, Nice, Monte Carlo, San Remo.
