Bhopal
City (pop., 1991: 1,063,000), capital of Madhya Pradesh state, India. Situated north of Nagpur, it is primarily an industrial city and a major rail junction. It is the site of India's largest mosque and home to several colleges. In 1984 Bhopal became the site of one of the worst industrial accidents in history when tons of toxic gas escaped from a Union Carbide insecticide plant and spread over a densely populated area; the final death toll was estimated at 3,800.
Former princely state, central India. It is crossed by the Vindhya Mtns.; the Narmada River is its S boundary. It was founded in 1723 by an Afghan chieftain who had served under the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. In its struggles with the Marathas, Bhopal was itself friendly to the British and concluded a treaty with them in 1817. It was the chief state of the Bhopal Agency and the second-largest Muslim principality of the British empire. At India's independence, Bhopal remained a separate Indian province. When it was incorporated into Madhya Pradesh in 1956, Bhopal city became the state's capital.
choir
Body of singers with more than one voice to a part. For many centuries, church choirs sang only plainsong (see Gregorian chant). The relative complexity of early polyphony required solo voices rather than choral performance, but by the 15th cent. polyphony was being performed chorally. The growth of the secular choir (or chorus) coincided with the beginnings of opera, which has generally called for professional choruses, oratorios, by contrast, being traditionally sung by amateurs.
cholla
Any cactus of the genus Opuntia, native to N. and S. America, having needlelike spines partly enclosed in a papery sheath. Chollas vary greatly in size and have small flowers, sometimes chartreuse and inconspicuous, but usually of more striking colors. O. leptocaulis, the desert Christmas cactus, bears bright red fruits through the winter. Living plants serve as food for desert animals. Cholla wood, a hollow cylinder with regularly spaced holes, is used for fuel and novelties. Some cholla fruit is edible.
Chopin
U.S. writer. Born in St. Louis, she lived in Louisiana during her marriage and began to write after her husband's death. A local colorist and interpreter of New Orleans culture, she foreshadowed later feminist themes. Among her more than 100 short stories are "Dé siré e's Baby" and "Madame Celestin's Divorce." The Awakening (1899), a realistic novel about the sexual and artistic awakening of a young mother who abandons her family, was initially condemned for its sexual frankness but later acclaimed.
