Lesage
Canadian politician. Born in Montreal, he served as Canadian minister of resources and development 1953-57. In 1958 he became leader of Quebec's Liberal Party; it won the 1960 provincial elections and he became premier. He called for social and cultural reform, appointing the first minister of education and modernizing the school system and civil service. He developed close cultural ties with France. After the Liberals were defeated in 1966, he served as opposition leader until 1970.

French novelist and playwright. He studied law in Paris but later abandoned his clerkship to devote himself to literature. His classic The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane (1715-1735), one of the earliest realistic novels, was influential in making the picaresque novel a European literary fashion. A prolific satirical dramatist, he adapted Spanish models for his early plays, incl. the highly successful comedy Crispin, Rival of His Master (1707). He also composed more than 100 comé dies-vaudevilles in the tradition of Moliè re.

measles
Highly contagious viral childhood disease. It initially resembles a severe cold with red eyes and fever; a blotchy rash and higher fever later develop. After recovery, patients have lifelong immunity. Adult patients tend to have more severe cases. Antibiotics now prevent death from secondary infections. Measles itself, for which there is no drug, requires only bed rest, eye protection, and steam for bronchial irritation. A vaccine developed in the 1960s proved not to give permanent immunity and is too heat-sensitive for use in tropical areas. The worldwide incidence of measles continues to rise. Research is currently directed toward development of a more stable vaccine. See also rubella.

rebate
Retroactive refund or credit given to a buyer who has paid the full list price for a product or service. Fair and equitable rebates are used simply as incentives available to all customers. So-called deferred (or exclusive-patronage) rebates are used by large vendors of perishables and consumer durable goods. To receive such a rebate, the purchaser must agree to buy certain goods or services exclusively from a particular vendor for a fixed period of time. Rebating was a common pricing tactic in the 19th cent., often used by large industrialists to undercut competition. The U.S. railroad industry practiced price discrimination by granting secret rebates to important customers; the rebates granted to Standard Oil Co. helped it acquire a monopoly over the oil industry.
