PBS
Private, nonprofit U.S. corporation of public television stations. PBS provides its member stations, which are supported by public funds and private contributions rather than by commercials, with educational, cultural, news, and children's programs that are produced by its members and by independent producers worldwide. Its popular programs have included Sesame Street, Masterpiece Theatre, Great Performances, NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, and Nova. PBS was founded in 1969 to coordinate and provide services to its member stations, which now number about 350. Funding is provided mainly by state governments, viewers' contributions, and grants from private foundations; the U.S. government, through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, supplies about 15%.


Rask
Danish linguist. A scholar of Indo-European languages, he was a principal founder of the science of comparative linguistics. His observation that sound shifts between corresponding words in Germanic and other Indo-European languages followed predictable patterns was the basis of a fundamental law of linguistics later enunciated by J. Grimm (Grimm's law). Rask also carried out extensive research on Old Norse, publishing his Investigation of the Origin of the Old Norse or Icelandic Language in 1818. By the end of his life he had mastered 25 languages and dialects.


RISC
Computer architecture that uses a limited number of instructions. RISC became popular in microprocessors in the 1980s. The traditional CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computer) architecture uses many instructions that do long, complex operations. Each RISC instruction is executed much more quickly than a CISC instruction, and most computational tasks can be processed faster. Many instruction sets combine attributes of CISC and RISC.


risk
In economics and finance, an allowance for the hazard (risk) in an investment or loan. Default risk refers to the chance that a borrower will not repay a loan. If a banker believes that a borrower may not repay a loan, the banker will charge the true interest plus a premium for the default risk, the premium depending on the degree of presumed risk. All stock investment carried an implicit risk since there is no guarantee of return on investment. Trading or variability risk is the amount that the return may vary, up or down, from the expected return on investment.
