Possible definitions for rathole

batholith
Large body of igneous rock formed beneath the earth's surface by the intrusion and solidification of magma. Batholiths are usually composed of coarse-grained rocks (e.g., granite or quartz diorite) and often have an irregular shape, with side walls that incline steeply. They may have a surface exposure of 40 sq mi (100 sq km) or more and may be 6-9 mi (10-15 km) thick. A well-known batholith is located in the Sierra Nevada range of California.

cathode
Terminal or electrode at which electrons enter a system, such as an electrolytic cell or an electron tube. In a battery or other source of direct current, the cathode is the positive terminal. In a passive load it is the negative terminal. In an electron tube, such as a cathode-ray tube, electrons stream off the cathode and travel through the tube toward the anode.

pathology
Medical specialty dealing with causes of disease and structural and functional changes in abnormal conditions. As autopsies, initially prohibited for religious reasons, became more accepted in the late Middle Ages, people learned more about the causes of death. In 1761 Giovanni Battista Morgagni (1682-1771) published the first book to locate disease in individual organs. In the mid-19th cent., the humoral theories of infection were replaced first by cell-based theories (see R. Virchow) and then by the bacteriologic theories of R. Koch and L. Pasteur. Today, pathologists work mostly in the laboratory and consult with a patient's physician after examining specimens incl. surgically removed body parts, blood and other fluids, urine, feces, and discharges. Culturing of infectious organisms, staining, fiber optic endoscopy, and electron microscopy have greatly expanded the information available to the pathologist.

Rathke
German anatomist and embryologist. He was the first to describe gill slits and gill arches in mammal and bird embryos. He thought they were vestigial gills but recognized their significance in development of the associated blood vessels. He first described Rathke's pouch (1839), an embryonic structure that develops into the pituitary gland's anterior lobe. He also did pioneering marine zoology research.
