baritone
In vocal music, the voice or register between bass and tenor, the most common category of male voice. Its range is approximately from the A a 10th below middle C to the F above middle C. The term baritonus was first employed in 15th-cent. five- and six-voice part music; when four-part settings became standard, the baritone part was dropped, and natural baritones were forced to develop either their bass or tenor register. Instruments that play principally in the baritone register include the baritone saxophone and the baritone horn.
Maritain
French philosopher. A devout Roman Catholic, his thought was based on Aristotelianism and Thomism, but incorporated features from other classical and modern philosophers and drew on anthropology, sociology, and psychology. Referring to Thomism as existentialist intellectualism, he emphasized the importance of the individual as well as the Christian community. Among his major works are Art and Scholasticism (1920), The Degrees of Knowledge (1932), Art and Poetry (1935), Man and the State (1951), and Moral Philosophy (1960).
tartan
Cross-checkered repeating pattern (or "sett") of bands, stripes, or lines of various colors and of definite width and sequence, woven into woolen cloth, sometimes with silk added. Such patterns have existed for centuries in many cultures, but have come to be regarded as fundamentally Scottish and as a quasi-heraldic Scottish family or clan emblem. Though claims of great antiquity have been made for Scottish tartans, few seem to predate the 17th or even 18th cent. as clan emblems. The Scottish Tartans Society (founded 1963) maintains a register of all known tartans, numbering about 1,300.
