Rabat
City (metro. area pop., with Salé , 1994: 1,386,000), capital of Morocco. It is situated on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Bou Regreg River, opposite Salé . One of Morocco's four imperial cities, it was founded in the 12th cent. by Almohad ruler Abd al-Mumin as a ribat (camp) quartering troops for his holy war against Spain. After 1609 the unified community of Rabat-Salé became the home of large numbers of Andalusian Moors who had been driven from Spain and, later, of the Sallee Corsairs, the most dreaded of Barbary Coast pirates. Under the French, it was made the administrative capital of a French protectorate after 1912. Now a center of the textile industry, it is noted for its carpets, blankets, and leather handicrafts.

While agriculture remains important in the area, the tourist industry has become significant, and resorts, incl. Sió fok and Balatonfü red, have been developed.
rebate
Retroactive refund or credit given to a buyer who has paid the full list price for a product or service. Fair and equitable rebates are used simply as incentives available to all customers. So-called deferred (or exclusive-patronage) rebates are used by large vendors of perishables and consumer durable goods. To receive such a rebate, the purchaser must agree to buy certain goods or services exclusively from a particular vendor for a fixed period of time. Rebating was a common pricing tactic in the 19th cent., often used by large industrialists to undercut competition. The U.S. railroad industry practiced price discrimination by granting secret rebates to important customers; the rebates granted to Standard Oil Co. helped it acquire a monopoly over the oil industry.
Saratov
City (pop., 1995: 902,000), W Russia. Located on the Volga River, it was founded in 1590 as a fortress to protect the trade route along the Volga. It was moved to a new site in 1616 and again in 1674 after the fortress was destroyed in a revolt. Linked to Moscow by railroad in the 1870s, Saratov became a major commercial center. Its road bridge across the Volga (opened 1965) is the largest in Europe. Now a major industrial center, it produces electric and petrochemical equipment and machine tools. Its educational institutions include a university (founded 1919) and a music conservatory.
