Rabat
City (metro. area pop., with Salé , 1994: 1,386,000), capital of Morocco. It is situated on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Bou Regreg River, opposite Salé . One of Morocco's four imperial cities, it was founded in the 12th cent. by Almohad ruler Abd al-Mumin as a ribat (camp) quartering troops for his holy war against Spain. After 1609 the unified community of Rabat-Salé became the home of large numbers of Andalusian Moors who had been driven from Spain and, later, of the Sallee Corsairs, the most dreaded of Barbary Coast pirates. Under the French, it was made the administrative capital of a French protectorate after 1912. Now a center of the textile industry, it is noted for its carpets, blankets, and leather handicrafts.
Abraham
First of the Hebrew patriarchs, revered by Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Genesis tells how Abraham, at 75, left Ur with his barren wife Sarai (later Sarah) and others to found a new nation in Canaan. There God made a covenant with him, promising that his descendants would inherit the land and become a great nation. Abraham fathered Ishmael by Sarah's maidservant Hagar; Sarah herself bore Isaac, who inherited the covenant. Abraham's faith was tested when God ordered him to sacrifice Isaac; he was prepared to obey but God relented. In Judaism he is a model of virtue, in Christianity he is the father of all believers, and in Islam he is an ancestor of Muhammad and a model (in Sufism) of generosity.
Brabant
Old duchy, NW Europe. Located in what is now the S Netherlands and central and N Belgium, the region in the 9th cent. AD was part of the kingdom of Lotharingia. In the late 12th cent. it became independent; it finally passed to the house of Burgundy in 1430. Inherited by the Habsburgs in 1477, it became a center of culture and commerce (see Antwerp and Brussels). The N section of Brabant took part in a revolt from Spain, and in 1609 was awarded to the United Provinces, while the S section remained part of Spanish (later Austrian) Netherlands. The N section now forms the Dutch province of N. Brabant. The S section eventually became part of Belgium and is divided between the provinces of Flemish Brabant and Walloon Brabant.
cabaret
Restaurant that serves liquor and offers light musical entertainment. The cabaret originated in France in the 1880s as a small club that presented amateur acts and satiric skits lampooning bourgeois conventions. The first German Kabarett was opened in Berlin c.1900 by Baron Ernst von Wolzogen and accompanied its musical acts with biting political satire. It became the center for underground political and literary expression and a showcase for the works of such social critics as B. Brecht and K. Weill, a decadent but fertile artistic milieu later portrayed in the musical Cabaret (1966). The English cabaret derived from concerts given in city taverns in the 18th-19th cent. and evolved into ...
