bunting
Any of about 37 species of seed-eating finch in the Old World genus Emberiza (subfamily Emberizinae, family Fringillidae), recognizable by their strong head pattern, and similar-appearing species.Emberiza species commonly breed in temperate Eurasia and from N Africa to India. The snow bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis, subfamily Emberizinae) breeds in the far north, and the lark bunting (Calamospiza melanocorys, Emberizinae) inhabits the U.S. Great Plains. In the U.S., buntings in the subfamily Cardinalinae (family Fringillidae) include the indigo bunting (Passerina cyanea) and the painted bunting (P. ciris). The male painted bunting, with red, green, and blue feathers, is the gaudiest bird that breeds in the U.S.
cutting
In botany, a plant section originating from the stem, leaf, or root and capable of developing into a new plant. The cutting is usually placed in warm, moist sand. Many plants, especially horticultural and garden varieties, are propagated through cuttings; by the use of new techniques, many other plants formerly not susceptible to propagation through cuttings have more successfully reproduced. The plants that develop from cuttings are clones. See also graft, layering.
hunting
Pursuit of game, principally as sport. To early humans, hunting was a necessity, and it remained so in many societies until recently. In the modern era, hunters have learned to limit their means, and codes have been established that give the quarry a fair chance to escape and avoid unnecessary suffering of wounded game. Game laws now protect game and limit hunting. Weapons include the rifle and the bow and arrow, and methods include stalking, still-hunting (lying in wait), tracking, driving, and calling. Dogs are sometimes employed to track, flush, or capture prey.
quoin
In architecture, both the external corner of a building and, more often, one of the stones used to form that corner. These stones are both structural and decorative in that they often differ in jointing, color, texture, or size from the masonry of the adjoining walls. Usually quoins are toothed (i.e., set in short courses in a regular pattern of alternating lengths). Such construction dates back to ancient Rome.
