duiker
Any of about 14 species of small, shy antelope. They live in most of Africa but are rarely seen by humans. The gray, or bush, duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia) has long legs and lives in regions with bush or grass cover. It stands 22-26 in. (57-67 cm) tall at the shoulder. Only males have horns, which are straight and spiky. Forest duikers (about 13 species, genus Cephalophus) are short-legged, hunchbacked animals that live in dense brush and in forests. They stand 14-18 in. (36-46 cm) tall and vary from pale brown through reddish brown to nearly black. Both sexes have short, spiky horns.


flicker
Any of six species of New World woodpeckers (genus Colaptes) noted for spending much time on the ground eating ants. The sticky saliva of the flicker is alkaline, perhaps to counteract the formic acid that ants secrete. Its bill is more slender than that of most woodpeckers and is slightly down-curved. Most flickers have a white rump, black breast band, and varied head markings, and most are about 13 in. (33 cm) long.

Quiche
Indian population of the Guatemalan highlands, largest of all ethnic groups speaking a Mayan language. The Quiche Mayas had an advanced civilization in pre-Columbian times. Records of their history and mythology are preserved in the Popol Vuh. Traditional Quiche are agricultural. Their homes are thatched huts, and they practice weaving and pottery. Nominally Roman Catholic, they conduct pagan rituals as well. Many were killed or displaced during the Guatemalan military's counterinsurgency campaign of the early 1980s. At present they number between 700,000 and 800,000.


quicksand
State in which water-saturated sand loses its supporting capacity and acquires the characteristics of a liquid. Quicksand is usually found in a hollow at the mouth of a large river or along a flat stretch of stream or beach where pools of water become partly filled with sand and an underlying layer of stiff clay or other dense material prevents drainage. Mixtures of sand, mud, and vegetation in bogs often act like true quicksands. Any sand may become "quick" if its effective weight is being carried by water between the grains. In that case, even a footstep may collapse the loose structure. The sand-water suspension is denser than an animal or human body, so the body cannot sink below the surface, but struggling may lead to loss of balance and drowning.
