Huizong
Penultimate emperor of the Northern Song dynasty in China. A painter and calligrapher, Huizong preferred the arts to government. He urged the painters in his academy to be extremely literal in their representations; his own paintings of birds and flowers are detailed, accurately colored, and perfectly composed. While he constructed an extravagant new palace garden, political disputes went unresolved and his favorite eunuchs gained unprecedented power in the government. His alliance with the Juchen tribes of Manchuria against the Liao led to the Juchen invasion that overthrew the Northern Song.
Luzon
Island (pop., 1990: 30,660,000), Philippines. The country's largest island, with an area of 40,420 sq mi (104,688 sq km), it is the site of Quezon City and Manila, the nation's capital. Located in the N Philippine archipelago, it is bounded by the Philippine Sea, the Sibuyan Sea, and the S. China Sea, and is separated from Taiwan by the Luzon Strait. It represents 35% of the nation's land area and 50% of its population. It is largely mountainous; in 1991 the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo altered the island's geography. It is the nation's leader in both industry and agriculture.
Quqon
Region, E Uzbekistan. A powerful khanate by the 18th cent., it recognized Chinese sovereignty c.1760. It was conquered by Russia in 1876, and was made a province of Turkistan under its ancient name, Fergana. It became part of the new Uzbek S.S.R. in 1924, and of independent Uzbekistan in 1991. Its chief city, also called Quqon (pop., 1993 est.: 184,000), was founded in 1732, though its settlement dates back to the 10th cent.
