Possible definitions for quad

quail
Any of several species of short-tailed game birds (family Phasianidae), some with a head plume that is straight or curled forward. Species range from 5 to 13 in. (13-33 cm) long. Some of the 95 Old World species have leg spurs, but the 36 New World species never do. Quails prefer open country and brushy borders. The male may help incubate the 12 eggs. Quails mainly eat seeds and berries but also leaves, roots, and insects. The common quail (Coturnix coturnix) of Eurasia and Africa is the only migratory bird in the order Galliformes. Quails are generally smaller than partridges. See also bobwhite.

quark
Any of a group of subatomic particles thought to be among the fundamental constituents of matter, more specifically, of protons and neutrons. The concept of the quark was first proposed by M. Gell-Mann and George Zweig (b.1937); its name was taken from J. Joyce's novel Finnegans Wake. Quarks include all particles that interact by means of the strong force. They have mass and spin, and they obey the Pauli exclusion principle. They have never been resolved into smaller components, and they never occur alone. Their behavior is explained by the theory of quantum chromodynamics, which provides a means of calculating their basic properties. There are six types of quark, called up, down, strange, charmed, bottom, and top. Only the up and down quarks are needed to make protons and neutrons; the others occur in heavier, unstable particles.

Agadir
Seaport (pop., 1994 est.: 155,000), SW Morocco. It was occupied in the 16th cent. by the Portuguese, but later became an independent Moroccan port. After the 1911 Moroccan Crisis when a German gunboat appeared offshore to protect perceived German interests, it was occupied by French troops in 1913. Modern growth began with the port's construction in 1914, and the development of the fishing industry. Destroyed in 1960 by earthquakes, tidal wave, and fire, it was rebuilt south of its original location. In addition to its port functions, it is a market place for the surrounding agricultural area.

Amado
Brazilian novelist. Born and reared on a cacao plantation, he published his first novel at 20. His early works, incl. The Violent Land (1942), explore the exploitation and suffering of plantation workers. Despite imprisonment and exile for leftist activities, he continued to produce novels, many of which have been banned in Brazil and Portugal. Later works such as Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon (1958), Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands (1966), and The War of the Saints (1993) preserve Amado's political attitude in their more subtle satire.

Baudot
French engineer. In 1874 he patented a telegraph code that by the mid-20th cent. had supplanted Morse code as the standard telegraphic alphabet. In Baudot's code, each letter is represented by a five-unit combination of current-on or current-off signals of equal duration, providing ...
