quark
Any of a group of subatomic particles thought to be among the fundamental constituents of matter, more specifically, of protons and neutrons. The concept of the quark was first proposed by M. Gell-Mann and George Zweig (b.1937); its name was taken from J. Joyce's novel Finnegans Wake. Quarks include all particles that interact by means of the strong force. They have mass and spin, and they obey the Pauli exclusion principle. They have never been resolved into smaller components, and they never occur alone. Their behavior is explained by the theory of quantum chromodynamics, which provides a means of calculating their basic properties. There are six types of quark, called up, down, strange, charmed, bottom, and top. Only the up and down quarks are needed to make protons and neutrons; the others occur in heavier, unstable particles.

Any fern of the genus Pteridium, represented by a single species (P. aquilinum) with 12 varieties found throughout the world in temperate and tropical regions. It has a perennial black rootstock, which creeps extensively underground and at intervals sends up fronds that may reach a height of 15 ft (5 m) or more. Though they die in autumn, the fronds often remain standing throughout winter, in some areas affording cover for game. Humans use the fronds for thatching and as fodder.


duck
Any of various relatively small, short-necked, large-billed waterfowl (several genera in subfamily Anatinae, family Anatidae). The legs of true ducks (Anatinae) are placed rearward (as are those of swans), resulting in a waddling gait. Most true ducks differ from swans and true geese in that male ducks molt twice annually, females lay large clutches of smooth-shelled eggs, and both sexes have overlapping scales on the skin of the leg and exhibit some differences between sexes in plumage and in call. All true ducks except shelducks and sea ducks (see diving duck) mature in the first year and pair only for the season. They are generally divided into three groups: perching ducks, dabbling ducks, and diving ducks. The whistling duck species, also called tree ducks, are not true ducks but are more closely related to geese and swans.


grackle
Any of several songbird species (in the family Icteridae) having iridescent black plumage and a long tail; also called crow-blackbird. Grackles use their stout, pointed bill to snap up insects, dig grubs from the soil, and kill small vertebrates, incl. fishes and baby birds; they can also crack hard seeds. The common grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) of N. America is about 12 in. (30 cm) long. The males of two Cassidus species (boat-tailed and great-tailed grackles) have a long, deeply keeled tail; these species are found in arid lands of the SW U.S. to Peru and in salt marshes from New Jersey to Texas, where they are locally called jackdaws.
