DSL
Broadband digital communications connection that operates over standard copper telephone wires. It requires a DSL modem, which splits transmissions into two frequency bands: the lower frequencies for voice (ordinary telephone calls) and the upper band for digital data, especially for connection to the Internet. Data can be transferred via DSL at much higher rates than with ordinary dial-up modem service; the range of DSL signals, however, is very small. Connections can be made only within a few miles of the nearest transmitting station. DSL and "xDSL" are umbrella terms under which a variety of protocols and technologies fall. ADSL (Asymmetric DSL) is a popular type of DSL in which most of the bandwidth of the connection is devoted to downloading data from the network to the user, leaving only a small-scale connection for uploading data. In HDSL (High bit-rate DSL) and SDSL (Symmetric DSL) the data stream is symmetric; that is, the upstream and downstream rates are the same. UDSL (Unidirectional DSL), VDSL (Very high data rate DSL), and others still under development are intended to offer even greater rates of data transmission.

Oslo
City (metro. area pop., 1997 est.: 494,000), capital of Norway. It lies at the N end of Oslo Fjord and constitutes a separate county. It was founded by King Harald III Hardraade c.1050. Haakon V built the Akershus fortress c.1300. After it was destroyed by fire in 1624, King Christian II of Denmark-Norway built a new town farther west and called it Christiania. It grew in the 19th cent., partly by absorbing neighboring towns, and replaced Bergen as Norway's largest and most influential city. It was renamed Oslo in 1925 and developed rapidly after World War II. It is the country's principal commercial, industrial, and transportation center, and its harbor is the largest and busiest in Norway.

Ailly
French theologian and cardinal. D'Ailly worked to end the Western Schism. He advocated the doctrine of conciliarism (see Conciliar Movement). He was active at the Council of Pisa (1409), which deposed both pope and antipope in favor of the new conciliar pope, Alexander V, and at the Council of Constance (1414-18), which called for the abdication of John XXIII and the election of yet another pope (Martin V). His writings included a geographical treatise, Image of the World, used by C. Columbus.
