Apis
In ancient Egyptian religion, a sacred bull deity worshiped at Memphis. The cult originated at least as early as the 1st dynasty (c.2925-c.2775 BC). Apis was probably at first a fertility god but became associated with Ptah and also with Osiris and Sokaris, gods of the dead. When an Apis bull died, it was buried with great pomp, and the calf that was to be its successor was installed at Memphis. Apis's priests drew omens from the bull's behavior, and his oracle had a wide reputation. The worship of Serapis (a combination of Osiris and Apis) probably arose at Memphis in the 3rd cent. BC and became one of the most widespread oriental cults in the Roman empire.

APRA
Party founded by V. Haya de la Torre (1924), which dominated Peruvian politics for decades. Largely synonymous with the so-called Aprista movement, it was dedicated to Latin Amer. unity, the nationalization of foreign-owned enterprises, and an end to the exploitation of Indians. Supported by workers and middle-class liberals, the party wielded significant power, but conservative forces took extraordinary measures to prevent Haya de la Torre from ever gaining the presidency. An APRA candidate, Alan Garc\u00ed a, finally became president in 1985. See also indigenismo.

City (pop., 1990: 835,000), NW Turkey. It was founded in the 3rd cent. BC, at the foot of the Mysian Mt. Olympus near the SE shore of the Sea of Marmara, as the seat of the kings of Bithynia. It flourished under Roman and later Byzantine emperors. After the Crusaders took Constantinople in 1204, it was a seat of Byzantine resistance. The Ottoman empire took it in the early 14th cent. and made it their first great capital. Conquered by Timur in the early 15th cent., it was recovered by the Ottomans. Though the Ottoman capital was later moved to Constantinople, Bursa continued to prosper. Today it is a center for an agricultural area, and is noted for its carpets and its many 15th-cent. mosques.

corset
Article of clothing worn to shape or constrict the torso. It dates to at least c.2000 BC, when it was worn as an outer garment by men as well as women in Minoan Crete. In the 16th-17th cent. it was worn to flatten the chest, and was reinforced with wood. Some outer corsets were jeweled and elaborately embroidered. After 1660 they were shaped to accentuate the breasts. In the 19th cent. the corset, now reinforced with whalebone or metal, changed with the style of dresses. It was abandoned in the 1920s, when straight clothes came into fashion, and in the 1930s it was replaced by the brassiere and girdle, made of elastic materials, and by the one-piece corselette.
