Arm of the Yellow Sea off the N China coast. With the Gulf of Liaotung (generally considered part of the Bo Hai), the gulf's maximum dimensions are 300 mi (480 km) northeast-southwest and 190 mi (306 km) east-west. The Huang (Yellow) River empties into it.
Bochco
U.S. television writer, director, and producer. Born in New York City, he worked as a scriptwriter and producer for Universal Studios (1966-78) and MTM Enterprises (1978-85) before forming his own production company in 1987. He cowrote and produced such successful television dramas as Hill Street Blues (1981-86), L.A. Law (1986-94), NYPD Blue (from 1993), and Murder One (1995-97), winning numerous Emmy awards for his scripts.
bodhi
(Sanskrit and Pali: "awakening" or "enlightenment") In Buddhism, the final enlightenment that ends the cycle of death and rebirth and leads to nirvana. This awakening transformed Siddhartha Gautama into the historical Buddha. Bodhi is achieved by ridding oneself of false beliefs and the hindrance of passions through the discipline of the Eightfold Path. Though not supported in canonical texts, commentaries give a threefold classification of bodhi: that of a perfectly enlightened one, or a Buddha; that of an independently enlightened one; and that of an arhat.
Boehm
German flutist and flute designer. Son of a goldsmith, he was a self-taught virtuoso flutist, who realized that the craft he learned from his father could be put to use to improve the instrument. He created a new kind of key mechanism in 1832. He later studied acoustics, and by 1847 he had completely redesigned the flute, giving it a different internal shape, moving the holes, and extending the use of the keys. His work achieved a stronger and more uniform tone than that of earlier instruments and formed the basis for the modern flute.
Bopp
German linguist. He published the first lengthy comparative analysis of Indo-European languages, his voluminous Comparative Grammar of Sanskrit, Zend, Latin, Lithuanian, Old Slavic, Gothic, and German (1833-52). Though the relation of Sanskrit to European languages was known at the time, Bopp was a pioneer in actually isolating common elements in the verbal and nominal morphology of Sanskrit and other older Indo-European languages. Most of his career was spent at the Univ. of Berlin.
Botha
First prime minister (1910-19) of the Union of S. Africa. Botha was elected to the S. African Republic's parliament in 1897, where he sided with moderates against Pres. P. Kruger's hostile policy toward Uitlanders (non-Boer, mostly English, settlers). In the S. African War he commanded southern forces besieging Ladysmith and then tried unsuccessfully to defend the Transvaal. As prime minister he sought earnestly to appease the English-speaking population and was bitterly attacked by Afrikaner nationalists.
