bingo
Game of chance played with cards having numbered squares corresponding to numbered balls drawn at random and won by covering five such squares in a row (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally). Cards are purchased and proceeds are placed into a common "pot"; winning cards are awarded a portion of the pot. Wildly popular throughout the mid-1900s, bingo has in recent decades suffered a decline, perhaps due to the increasing popularity of state-sanctioned lottery operations and legalized gambling. The earliest name for the game, lotto, was recorded in 1776.
dingo
Australian wild dog (Canis dingo), apparently introduced from Asia 5,000-8,000 years ago. It has short, soft fur, a bushy tail, and erect, pointed ears. It is about 4 ft (1.2 m) long, incl. the 12-in. (30-cm) tail, and stands about 24 in. (60 cm) high. Its color varies between yellowish and reddish brown, often with white underparts, feet, and tail tip. Dingoes hunt alone or in small groups. They formerly preyed on kangaroos but now feed mainly on rabbits and sometimes on livestock. They contributed, through competition for resources, to the extermination of the Tasmanian wolf and Tasmanian devil on the Australian mainland.
king
Male sovereign over a nation or territory, of higher rank than any other ruler except an emperor. A king's female counterpart is a queen. Some kings have been elected, as in medieval Germany, but most inherit the position. The community may concentrate all spiritual and political power in the sovereign, or power may be shared constitutionally with other government institutions. Some kings are heads of state but not heads of government. In the past, some were regarded as semidivine representatives of God on earth; others were gods in their own right or supernatural beings who became gods after death (see divine kingship). Since the 17th cent., the power held by monarchs has been widely regarded as deriving from the people. See also constitutional monarchy, czar, khan, monarchy, pharaoh.
linga
In Hinduism, the phallus, symbol of the god Shiva and of generative power. Fashioned from wood, gems, metal, or stone, lingas are the main objects of worship in temples to Shiva and family shrines throughout India. Linga worship dates from at least the 1st-2nd cent. AD. The yoni, symbol of the female sex organ, often forms the base of the erect linga, a reminder that the male and female principles together represent the totality of existence. The linga is worshiped with offerings of flowers, water, fruit, leaves, and rice; the purity of the materials and the cleanliness of the worshiper are particularly stressed.
