Diana
Roman goddess of nature, animals, and the hunt. As a fertility deity, she was invoked for aid in conception and childbirth. She was virtually indistinguishable from the Greek goddess Artemis. In her cult in Rome she was considered the protector of the lower classes, especially slaves.


liana
Any of various long-stemmed, woody vines, especially of tropical rain forests, that are rooted in the soil and climb or twine around other plants as they grow upward. Lianas often form a tangled network, up to 330 ft (100 m) high, around and among the trees that support them.


Agana
Town (pop., 1990: 1,100), capital of Guam. It lies on Guam's W coast on Agana Bay. A town of 10,000 in 1940, it was completely destroyed in World War II and has come back slowly. Nearby Latte Stone Park features pillars (latte stones) that supported houses of the prehistoric Latte culture.


Branagh
British actor, director, and writer. After making his London stage debut in 1981, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Co. (1984-87), where he won acclaim in Hamlet and Henry V. He cofounded the Renaissance Theatre Co. (1987), in which he served as actor, director, and writer. He directed and starred in film versions of Shakespeare, incl. Henry V (1989), Much Ado About Nothing (1993), and Hamlet (1996), as well as Dead Again (1991) and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994). He was married to E. Thompson.


Ciano
Italian politician. He took part in the Fascist March on Rome and later entered the diplomatic corps. After marrying B. Mussolini's daughter Edda in 1930, he became minister of foreign affairs (1936) and initiated the Rome-Berlin Axis that helped bring Italy into World War II. After several Axis defeats in 1942, he advocated a separate peace with the Allies. Mussolini dismissed his cabinet (1943), but Ciano and other leading Fascists forced Mussolini's resignation. Later, on Mussolini's orders, Ciano was tried for treason and executed.


Cranach
German painter and printmaker. He took his name from Kronach, the town of his birth. Little is known about his early life or training. In Vienna (c.1501-4) he painted some notable portraits and landscapes characteristic of the Danube school. From 1505 to 1550 he was court painter in Wittenberg, where he achieved great success and wealth painting portraits, mythological subjects, and altarpieces for Protestant and Catholic churches. He attracted so many young artists to Wittenberg that the town became an art center. A friend of M. Luther, he became known as the chief pictorial propagandist of the Protestant cause in Germany. He produced numerous engravings and over 100 woodcuts, notably for the first German edition of the New Testament (1522). After his death, his style was perpetuated by his son, Lucas the Younger (1515-1586).
