Heshen
Infamous Chinese courtier who abused his influence with the Qianlong emperor to assume high ministerial positions and control the disbursement of revenue and the recruitment of personnel. His embezzlement of funds intended for suppressing the White Lotus rebellion resulted in prolonging the fighting and drove the imperial troops to looting, consequently undermining the authority of the Qing dynasty. He was arrested by the Qianlong emperor's successor and forced to commit suicide.


leshy
In Slavic mythology, a forest spirit. The leshy is an antic spirit who enjoys playing tricks on people, though when angered he can be treacherous. He is seldom seen, but his voice can be heard in the forest laughing, whistling, or singing. He often takes the shape of a man, but his eyebrows, eyelashes, and right ear are missing, his head is pointed, and he lacks a hat and belt. In his native forest, the leshy is as tall as the trees, but the moment he steps beyond it, he shrinks to the size of grass. The leshy is familiar to most Slavs living in heavily forested areas.


Qasimi
Ruler of the Persian Gulf emirate of Sharjah since 1972. He succeeded his brother, who was assassinated. A political moderate, he has favored strengthening the federal government of the United Arab Emirates. In the wake of a failed coup attempt by another brother, he agreed to implement financial and administrative reforms and also agreed to make his brother crown prince, with the right to succeed him, but changed his mind and exiled his brother in 1990.

Erect, annual plant (Sesamum indicum) of numerous types and varieties in the family Pedaliaceae. It has been cultivated since antiquity for its seeds, which are used as food and flavoring and yield a prized oil. The hulled seeds, creamy or pearly white and tiny, have a mild, nutlike aroma and taste. The whole seed is used extensively in the cuisines of the Middle East and Asia. Sesame oil, noted for its stability and its resistance to becoming rancid, is used as a salad or cooking oil, in shortening and margarine, in the manufacture of soaps, pharmaceuticals, and lubricants, and as an ingredient in cosmetics.


yeshiva
Academy of higher Talmudic learning. Through its biblical and legal exegesis and application of scripture, the yeshiva has defined and regulated Judaism for centuries. Traditionally, it is the setting for the training and ordination of rabbis. Following the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem, a series of yeshivas were set up around the Levant to codify and explain centuries of Jewish scholarship. In medieval times, yeshivas flourished in Europe, wherever there were large populations of Jews. The first yeshiva in the U.S., Etz Hayyim (1886), later became Yeshiva Univ. (1945).
