Cats
Dutch poet. A magistrate and high official, he was enormously popular as a writer of emblem books, consisting of woodcuts or engravings with verses pointing to a moral. His Mirror of Old and New Times (1632) contains many quotations that have become household sayings in Holland, and he used it to express the ethical concerns of Dutch Calvinists, especially about love and marriage.
oats
Hardy cereal plant (Avena sativa), cultivated in temperate regions, that is able to live in poor soil. The edible starchy grain is used primarily as livestock feed, but is also processed into rolled oats and oat flour for human consumption. High in carbohydrates, oats also provide protein, fat, calcium, iron, and B vitamins. Oat straw is used for animal feed and bedding.
Qatar
Independent emirate on the W coast of the Persian Gulf. Area: 4,412 sq mi (11,427 sq km). Population (1997 est.): 561,000. Capital: Doha. Most of the population is Arab, with S. Asian and Iranian minorities who are often migrant workers. Languages: Arabic (official), English. Religion: Islam (official). Currency: Qatar riyal. Qatar is mostly stony, sandy, and barren, and consists of salt flats, dune desert, and arid plains. Largely because of oil and natural gas exports, Qatar's gross national product per capita is one of the highest in the world. The government owns all of the agricultural land and generates most of the economic activity. The private sector participates in trade and contracting on a limited scale. It is a monarchy, and its basis of legislation is Islamic law. The head of state and government is the emir assisted by the prime minister. It was partly controlled by Bahrain in the 18th-19th cent. and was nominally part of the Ottoman empire until World War I. In 1916 it became a British protectorate. Oil was discovered in 1940, and the country rapidly modernized. Qatar declared independence in 1971, when the British protectorate ended. In 1991 it served as a base for air strikes against Iraq in the Persian Gulf War.
balsa
Tree (Ochroma pyramidale, or O. lagopus) of the bombax family (Bombacaceae), native to tropical S. America and noted for its extremely light wood, which resembles clear white pine or basswood. Because of its buoyancy (about twice that of cork), balsa is well adapted for making floats for lifelines and life preservers. Its resiliency makes it an excellent shock-absorbing packing material. Its insulating properties make it a good lining material for incubators, refrigerators, and cold-storage rooms. Because it combines lightness and high insulating power, it is a valuable construction material for transportation containers for solidified carbon dioxide. It is also used in the construction of airplane passenger compartments and in model airplanes and boats.
