Anath
Chief W. Semitic goddess of love and war, sister and helpmate to the Baal, whom she retrieved from the land of the dead. One of the best known of Canaanite deities, she was famous for her youthful vigor and ferocity in battle. In Egypt she was depicted nude holding flowers and standing on a lion. During the Hellenistic Age, Anath and Astarte were merged into Atargatis.
canasta
Form of rummy, using two full decks, in which players or partnerships try to meld groups of three or more cards of the same rank and score bonuses for seven-card melds. Eleven cards are dealt to each player, the undealt portion of the pack is placed on the table, and the top card is turned up to start the discard pile. Each player in turn must draw, may meld, and must discard one card. A hand ends when a player melds his last card (goes out). Canasta originated in Uruguay in the late 1940s; its name (meaning "basket") is probably a reference to the tray for holding discards.
fantasia
Musical composition free in form and inspiration, often for an instrumental soloist. Most fantasias try to convey the impression of improvisation. The first were Italian works for lute (c.1530). Keyboard fantasias became common in the late 16th cent.; both organ and harpsichord fantasias flourished in the 17th-18th cent. in Britain, Germany, and France. Fugal, imitative texture, sometimes highly learned in character, was common from the beginning, often alternating with running passagework and highly chromatic chordal passages in free rhythms. Ensemble fantasias were widely composed as well. Important composers include J. P. Sweelinck, G. Frescobaldi, J. J. Froberger, H. Purcell, and J. S. Bach.
fantasy
Mental images or imaginary narratives that distort or entirely depart from reality. Primary fantasies arise spontaneously from the unconscious, while secondary fantasies are consciously summoned and pursued. S. Freud saw fantasy as a vehicle for the expression of repressed desires (see repression). Fantasy is important in the lives of children and is a vital element in play. In adult life it is crucial to creative thinking and the making of art. Fantasy can become destructive if it serves as a constant refuge from the world of reality and a source of delusions.
manatee
Any of three species (family Trichechidae) of slow-moving, shallow-water herbivorous mammals. Manatees have a tapered body ending in a rounded flipper, no hind flippers, and foreflippers near the head. The Caribbean manatee (Trichechus manatus) lives along coasts of the SE U.S. and N S. America; the Amazonian manatee (T. inunguis) and the W. African manatee (T. senegalensis) inhabit rivers and estuaries. Adults are 8-15 ft (2.5-4.5 m) long and weigh up to 1,500 lbs (700 kg).
