Anath
Chief W. Semitic goddess of love and war, sister and helpmate to the Baal, whom she retrieved from the land of the dead. One of the best known of Canaanite deities, she was famous for her youthful vigor and ferocity in battle. In Egypt she was depicted nude holding flowers and standing on a lion. During the Hellenistic Age, Anath and Astarte were merged into Atargatis.
anatomy
Biological field that deals with body structures as revealed by dissection. Herophilus first laid the factual groundwork for gross anatomy, the study of structures large enough to see without a microscope. Galen's ideas were the authority for anatomy in Europe until A. Vesalius' methods placed it on a firm foundation of observed fact. The microscope permitted the discovery of tiny structures (e.g., capillaries and cells), the subject of microscopic anatomy. Crucial advances in this area, incl. the microtome, which slices specimens into extremely thin sections, and staining (e.g., gram stain), led to the new fields of cytology and histology. Electron microscopy opened up the study of subcellular structures, and X-ray diffraction gave rise to the new subspecialty of molecular anatomy. Comparative anatomy compares similar structures in different animals to see how they have changed with evolution.
ant
Any member of approximately 8,000 species of the social insect family Formicidae. Ants are found worldwide but are especially common in hot climates. They range from 0.1 to 1 in. (2-25 mm) long and are usually yellow, brown, red, or black. Ants eat both plant and animal substances; some even "farm" fungi for food, cultivating them in their nests, or "milk" aphids. Ant colonies consist of three castes (queens, males, and workers, incl. soldiers) interacting in a highly complex society paralleling that of the honeybees. Well-known ant species are the carpenter ants of N. America, the voracious army ants of tropical America, and the stinging fire ant.

While agriculture remains important in the area, the tourist industry has become significant, and resorts, incl. Si\u00f3 fok and Balatonf\u00fc red, have been developed.
banana
Fruit of the genus Musa (family Musaceae), a gigantic herbaceous plant spread by rhizomes, and one of the most important food crops of the world. The banana is consumed extensively throughout the tropics, where it is grown, and is valued in the temperate zone for its flavor, nutritional value, and constant availability. Hundreds of varieties are cultivated. Perhaps the most important species is the common banana, M. sapientum. The ripe fruit is high in carbohydrates (mainly sugar), potassium, and vitamins C and A, and low in protein and fat. Though usually eaten ...
