Possible definitions for proclus
crocus
Any of about 75 species of low-growing plants, with corms, that make up the genus Crocus (iris family), native to the Alps, S Europe, and the Mediterranean and widely grown for their cuplike blooms in early spring or fall. The spring-flowering sorts have a floral tube so long that the ovary is belowground, sheltered from climatic changes. Saffron comes from C. sativus of W Asia. The alpine C. vernus is the chief ancestor of the common garden crocus. Dutch yellow crocus (C. flavus) and C. biflorus are popular spring-flowering species.
proconsul
In the ancient Roman republic, a consul whose powers had been extended for a definite period beyond his regular one-year term. Such extensions were necessitated by such events as long periods of war. The extension of such a chief magistrate's term was originally voted by the people, but the power was soon taken by the Senate. Provincial governors were usually magistrates whose terms had been extended. Under the empire (after 27 BC), governors of senatorial provinces were called proconsuls.
Proteus
In Greek mythology, the prophetic old man of the sea and the shepherd of sea animals such as seals. He was subject to Poseidon. He knew all things--past, present, and future--but disliked telling what he knew. Those who wanted information from him had to catch him sleeping and bind him. He would try to escape by changing his form, but if a captor held him fast he gave the wished-for answer and plunged into the sea.
