Prestes
Brazilian revolutionary. In 1924 he led a rebel force on a three-year trek through Brazil's interior in an effort to spark a rebellion in the countryside. Though the effort failed, he became a romantic hero. He went on to lead the Brazilian Communist Party, which advocated ending payments on the national debt, nationalization of foreign-owned companies, and land reform. Imprisoned after a violent uprising in 1935, he was released after World War II, and later served briefly as a senator.


Trieste
Former region, W Istrian Peninsula, S Europe, surrounding and incl. the city of Trieste. It was occupied by Yugoslavia in 1945. The U.N. established it as a free territory in 1947. It was divided for administrative purposes into two zones: Zone A in the north, incl. the city, was under the British and Americans; Zone B in the south was under the Yugoslavs. In 1954 most of the N zone was incorporated into Italy; the S zone went to Yugoslavia.

Seaport city (metro. area pop., 1996 est.: 224,000), capital of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, NE Italy. It lies at the head of the Adriatic Sea on the Gulf of Trieste. It was under Roman control from the 2nd cent. BC until the collapse of the empire; then it was under episcopal rule 948-1202. It placed itself in 1382 under Habsburg protection and became the prosperous main port of the Austro-Hungarian empire. After World War I it was ceded to Italy. Occupied by Germany in World War II and seized by Yugoslavia in 1945, it became the center of the Free Territory of Trieste in 1947. Returned to Italy in 1954, it became the regional capital in 1963.
