Russian ballerina, considered the greatest ballerina of the early 20th cent. She studied at the Imperial Ballet school from 1891 and joined the Mariinsky Theater company in 1899, becoming prima ballerina in 1906. From 1908 she toured in Europe as a guest artist with many companies. In 1913 she left Russia to tour with her own company, which showcased her outstanding classical performances in such ballets as M. Fokine's Dying Swan, Pavillon d'Armide, and Chopiniana, as well as various short solos. Her many tours brought ballet to audiences in many countries for the first time and did much to popularize ballet worldwide.
