Picts
Ancient people of what is now E and NE Scotland. The name (from Latin picti, "painted") referred to their body painting or tattooing. They were probably descended from pre-Celtic aborigines. They attacked Hadrian's Wall in 297 and warred constantly with the Romans. They united their two kingdoms by the 7th cent. and converted to Christianity, and in 843 Kenneth I, king of the Scots, included them in the kingdom of Alba, later Scotland.
ACTH
Polypeptide hormone made in the pituitary gland. It regulates the activity of part of the cortex of the adrenal glands, the production site of important steroid hormones that affect electrolyte and water balance and the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. ACTH is found in vertebrates (except jawless fishes); in mammals it contains 39 amino acids. Overproduction of ACTH is one cause of Cushing's syndrome.
Bactria
Ancient country, SW Asia. It was between the Hindu Kush and the Amu Darya in present-day Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Its capital was the city of Bactra. From the 6th cent. BC it was controlled by the Achaemenian dynasty; conquered by Alexander the Great, the area was ruled after his death (323 BC) by the Seleucids. It was important throughout these years as a crossroads for East-West overland trade as well as for religion and art. The area ultimately came under Muslim control in the 7th cent. AD.
cactus
Any of the flowering plants that make up the family Cactaceae, containing about 1,650 species, native through most of N. and S. America, with the greatest number and variety in Mexico. Cacti are succulent perennials. Most live in and are well adapted to dry regions. Cacti generally have thick herbaceous or woody stems containing chlorophyll. Leaves usually are absent or greatly reduced, minimizing the surface area from which water can be lost; the stem is the site of photosynthesis. The generally thin, fibrous, shallow root systems range widely in area to absorb superficial moisture. Cacti vary greatly in size and appearance, from buttonlike peyote and low clumps of prickly pear and hedgehog cactus (Echinocereus) to the upright columns of barrel cacti (Ferocactus and Echinocactus) and the imposing saguaro. Cacti can be distinguished from other succulent plants by the presence of small cushionlike structures (areoles) from which, in almost all species, spines arise, as do flowers, branches, and leaves (when present). Flowers, often large and colorful, are usually solitary. Cacti are widely cultivated as ornamentals. Various species, notably prickly pears and chollas, are cultivated as food. Barrel cacti are an emergency source of water for humans.
