AARP
Nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that addresses the needs and interests of Americans aged 50 and older. It was founded in 1958 by a retired teacher, Ethel Andrus, and merged in 1982 with the National Retired Teachers Assn., also founded by Andrus (1947). Its bimonthly magazine, Modern Maturity, has the largest circulation of any U.S. periodical. Its membership of more than 30 million and its members' reliably high voting turnout have made it one of the most powerful lobbying groups in the U.S.


ape
Any of the tailless, anthropoid primates of two families: Hylobatidae (the lesser apes: gibbons and siamangs) and Pongidae (the great apes: chimpanzees, bonobos, orangutans, and gorillas). Apes are found in the tropical forests of W and central Africa and SE Asia. They are distinguished from monkeys by having no tail, having an appendix, and having a more complex brain. Apes typically move about by swinging, and they tend to stand erect, occasionally walking on two feet. Highly intelligent animals, apes are more closely related to humans than are any other living primates. As a result of habitat destruction and hunting, all the apes are now regarded as endangered.


APEC
Trade group established in 1989 to promote the economic development of its members. The original members were Australia, Brunei, Canada, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, S. Korea, Thailand, and the U.S, as well as Taiwan and Hong Kong (since membership was based on "economies" rather than nations). The original 15 represented nearly 2 billion people and the world's leading exporters. APEC's first summit was held in Seattle in 1993. Mexico, Chile, and Papua New Guinea joined APEC in 1994. The APEC group now represents about 40% of the world's population, 40% of global trade, and 50% of the world's gross national product. See also N. Amer. Seaport town (pop., 1995 est.: 33,000) and capital, Samoa. It lies on the N coast of Upolu Island. Its economy centers on the export of goods to Amer. Samoa. R. L. Stevenson is buried at nearby Mt. Vaea; Vailima, his former home, is now the residence of the head of state.


Apis
In ancient Egyptian religion, a sacred bull deity worshiped at Memphis. The cult originated at least as early as the 1st dynasty (c.2925-c.2775 BC). Apis was probably at first a fertility god but became associated with Ptah and also with Osiris and Sokaris, gods of the dead. When an Apis bull died, it was buried with great pomp, and the calf that was to be its successor was installed at Memphis. Apis's priests drew omens from the bull's behavior, and his oracle had a wide reputation. The worship of Serapis (a combination of Osiris and Apis) probably arose at Memphis in the 3rd cent.
