Opet
Ancient Egyptian festival of the New Year. In the celebration of Opet, statues of Amon and Mut and their son Khons were carried down the Nile on barges in a ritual journey from their shrines at Karnak to the temple of Luxor. There the statues remained about 24 days, a festival time for Luxor. The images were returned to Karnak by the same route in a second public appearance that closed the festival.

optics
Science concerned with the production and propagation of light, the changes it undergoes and produces, and closely related phenomena. Physical optics deals with the nature and properties of light; geometric optics deals with the formation of images by mirrors, lenses, and other devices that use light. Optical data processing involves manipulation of the information content of an image formed by coherent (one-wavelength) optical systems. The study of optics has led to the development of devices such as eyeglasses and contact lenses, telescopes, microscopes, cameras, binoculars, lasers, and optical fibers (see fiber optics).

Ostade
Dutch painter and printmaker. Known for his genre paintings of peasant life, he also did religious subjects, portraits, and landscapes. The most important influence on his style was A. Brouwer. Like Brouwer, he delighted in scenes such as tavern brawls, usually in dimly lit interiors, as in Carousing Peasants in an Interior (c.1638). He employed a broad, vigorous technique in a subdued range of colors. After he adopted a brighter palette in the 1640s, his subjects became less ribald, and from the 1650s he painted many of them in outdoor settings (e.g., The Itinerant Fiddler, 1672).

otter
Any of several carnivore species in four genera of semiaquatic, web-footed members of the weasel family (Mustelidae), found throughout Africa, N. and S. America, Europe, and Asia. Otters have the same general proportions as weasels. Size varies among species; total length is typically 3-7 ft (1-2 m) and weight is 6.5-60 lbs (3-27 kg); the large sea otter is an exception. Otter fur, especially that of N animals, is highly valued. Most species live near rivers; some live near lakes or streams; the sea otter is completely marine. Otters eat small aquatic animals. They are inquisitive and playful; a favorite sport is sliding down a mudbank and plunging into water.
