bovid
Any ruminant of the family Bovidae. Bovids have hollow, unbranched, permanently attached horns; they are grazing or browsing animals found in both the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, most often in grasslands, scrublands, or deserts. Most species live in large herds. Species range in shoulder height from a 10-in. (25-cm) antelope to the 6.5-ft (2-m) bison. Some of the 138 species (incl. domestic cattle, sheep, goats) are of economic value to humans. Others (incl. bighorn and some antelope) are hunted for food, sport, horns, or hides. See also buffalo, ruminant.

Loti
French novelist. As a naval officer, Loti visited the Middle East and E. Asia, which later provided the exotic settings of his novels and reminiscences. His first novel, Aziyadé (1879), won him critical and popular success. Other novels include An Iceland Fisherman (1886), Japan: Madam Chrysanthemum (1887), and Disenchanted (1906). Among his recurring motifs are love, death, and despair at the passing of sensuous life. He reveals his compassion in such works as The Book of Pity and of Death (1890). His themes anticipated some of the preoccupations of French literature between the world wars.

motion
Change in position of a body relative to another body or with respect to a frame of reference or coordinate system. Motion occurs along a definite path, the nature of which determines the character of the motion. Translational motion occurs if all points in a body have similar paths relative to another body. Rotational motion occurs when any line on a body changes its orientation relative to a line on another body. Motion relative to a moving body, such as motion on a moving train, is called relative motion. Indeed, all motions are relative, but motions relative to the earth or to any body fixed to the earth are often assumed to be absolute, as the effects of the earth's motion are usually negligible. See also Brownian motion, harmonic motion, periodic motion, simple motion, uniform circular motion.
