Constance
Queen of Sicily (1194-98) and Holy Roman empress-consort (1191-97). The daughter of King Roger II of Sicily, she married the future emperor Henry VI in 1186 and was later crowned with him in Rome. Her marriage gave the Hohenstaufen dynasty a claim to the Sicilian throne, which she asserted against the opposition of her nephew Tancred. When Henry died (1197) she secured the protection of Pope Innocent III and had her son Frederick II crowned king in 1198.
Constanta
City (pop., 1992: 350,500), chief seaport, Romania. The first known settlement in the area was at the ancient city of Tomis, founded in the 7th cent. BC by the Greeks. Romans annexed the region in the 1st cent. BC; Ovid was exiled there in AD 9-17. In the 4th cent. AD, Tomis was reconstructed by Constantine the Great and renamed Constantiana. Subject to numerous invasions from the 6th cent., it declined following the Turkish conquest in the early 15th cent. Its modern development as an industrial, trading, and cultural center dates from its return to Romania in 1878.
Montand
French (Italian-born) actor and singer. Raised in Marseille, he was sponsored as a singer by E. Piaf in the late 1940s. He married the actress Simone Signoret (1921-1985) in 1951. International renown came with his appearance in the film Wages of Fear (1953). In Hollywood he starred opposite M. Monroe in Let's Make Love (1960), and their romantic affair was widely publicized. He thereafter divided his time between the U.S. and France; his later films included Z (1969), Jean de Florette, and Manon of the Spring (both 1987). For most of his life he was known as a supporter of left-wing causes, and as a singer he enjoyed great success, especially in France.
Rostand
French playwright. He wrote poetry, essays, and plays for puppet theater before his first stage play, The Red Glove, was performed in 1888. His most popular work is the heroic comedy Cyrano de Bergerac (1898), the story of an ugly, long-nosed soldier who despairs of winning the lady he loves and helps a friend woo her instead. The final example of French Romantic drama, it was enormously successful internationally. He also wrote L'aiglon (1900) for S. Bernhardt.
