Abenaki
Confederacy of Algonquian-speaking Indian peoples in NE N. America organized to resist the Iroquois confederacy, especially the Mohawk. It consisted principally of the Malecite, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot peoples. In the 17th cent. the Abenaki sided with the French against the English, but after severe defeats they withdrew to Canada, eventually settling at Saint-Franç ois-du-Lac in Quebec. Their current population is about 1,000.


Agenais
Historical region, SW France. In ancient Gaul, Agenais was the country of the Nitrobriges, then a Gallo-Roman civitas, whose limits became those of the diocese of Agen. It was acquired by the dukes of Aquitaine in 1036. When Eleanor of Aquitaine married the future Henry II of England in 1152, Agenais became the possession of the English kings. It alternated between French and British rule until it was reunited to the French crown in 1615.


Alea
Cuban film director. After earning a law degree in Cuba, he studied filmmaking in Rome (1951-53). A supporter of F. Castro, he helped develop Cuba's film industry after 1959 and made the Communist regime's first official feature film, Stories of the Revolution (1960). Later he worked within the restrictions of the regime to satirize and explore various aspects of life in postrevolutionary Cuba in such internationally acclaimed films as Death of a Bureaucrat (1966), Memories of Underdevelopment (1968), The Survivors (1978), and Strawberry and Chocolate (1993). He is regarded as the finest director Cuba has produced.

blenny
Any of numerous and diverse fishes (suborder Blenniodei, order Perciformes) that are mostly small, marine species found from tropical to cold seas. Blennies are slim, ranging from moderately elongated to very long and eel-like. Their habitats range from rocky pools to sandy beaches, reefs, and beds of kelp. Many live in shallow water, but some range to depths of about 1,500 ft (450 m). Some are mainly herbivores; others are partial or complete carnivores. They are generally unobtrusive and of little economic importance.

Any member of 1,600 species and subspecies of small, wingless, bloodsucking (parasitic) insects (order Siphonaptera), found from the Arctic Circle to the Arabian deserts. Specialized anatomical structures allow the flea to attach itself to the skin of mammals or birds and consume their blood.
