carbine
Light, short-barreled musket or rifle. First used in the 16th cent., it was chiefly a cavalry weapon until the 18th cent. It was later carried by some unmounted officers, artillerymen, and other specialists. By the end of the 20th cent., light assault rifles (such as the Soviet AK-47 or the U.S. M16 rifle) had made the carbine obsolete as a military weapon, but it remained popular as a recreational weapon for hunting in heavy brush or on horseback.
catbird
Any of several passerine species (family Mimidae) named for their mewing calls, which they use in addition to song. The N. Amer. catbird (Dumetella carolinensis) is 9 in. (23 cm) long and gray with a black cap. It is found in gardens and thickets. The black catbird (Melanoptila glabrirostris) is found in coastal Yucat\u00e1 n. Three species of the bowerbird family are also called catbirds; they are found in Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands and do not build bowers but hold territories in the forest by loud singing.
catkin
Elongated cluster of single-sex flowers bearing scaly bracts and usually lacking petals. Many trees bear catkins, incl. willows, birches, and oaks. Wind carries pollen from male to female catkins or from male catkins to female flowers that take a different form (e.g., in spikes).
Gabin
French film actor. The son of a music-hall comedian, he began as a performer at the Folies Berg\u00e8 re (1923). After his film debut in 1931, he earned critical and popular acclaim in Maria Chapdelaine (1934), P\u00e9 p\u00e9 le moko (1937), Grand Illusion (1937), The Human Beast (1938), and Daybreak (1939), often portraying the silent, tough antihero surviving in a world of social outcasts. He appeared in several films as Inspector Maigret and also in Speaking of Murder (1959), Money, Money, Money (1962), and The Upper Hand (1967).
Harbin
City (pop., 1990: 2,443,000), capital and largest city of Heilongjiang province, NE China. Located on the Songhua River in the center of Manchuria, it grew with the arrival of the Chinese Eastern Railway, built by the Russians in the late 19th cent. A Russian military base during the Russo-Japanese War, it was a haven for Russian refugees after the Russian Revolution of 1917, and had the largest Russian population of any city outside the Soviet Union. Chinese Communist forces took the city in 1946 and from it directed their conquest of Manchuria. Since 1949 it has become the chief industrial base of NE China, and is a shipping center for agricultural products.
Katsina
City (pop., 1996 est.: 207,000), N Nigeria. Probably founded c.1100, it was the capital of the kingdom of Katsina, one of the earliest Hausa states, and an ancient center of learning.
