Dies
U.S. politician. Born in Colorado, Texas, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives 1931-45 and 1953-59. He originally supported the New Deal, but by 1937 had turned against it. In 1938 he was named chairman of the House Un-American Activities Committee; popularly known as the Dies Committee, it pursued alleged subversives in New Deal agencies and labor unions. Conservatives applauded its exposure of supposed subversives, and liberals decried Dies's tactics of smearing reputations with unproved charges.


Dinesen
Danish writer. She married her cousin, a baron, and they moved to Kenya; Out of Africa (1937; film, 1985), a memoir of her years on their coffee plantation (1914-31), reveals a deep love of Africa and its people. Her finely crafted stories, set in the past and pervaded with an aura of supernaturalism, incorporate themes of eros and dreams; her collections include Seven Gothic Tales (1934) and Winter's Tales (1942). Her only novel, The Angelic Avengers (1944), was seen as a satire of Nazi-occupied Denmark.


Estes
U.S. psychologist. Born in In the 1940s he worked with B. F. Skinner on instrumental learning, and in 1950 he introduced stimulus sampling theory (SST), a model for describing learning mathematically. His later work has focused on "cognitive architectures." His works include Learning Theory and Mental Development (1970), Statistical Models in Behavioral Research (1991), and Classification and Cognition (1994). He has taught at Stanford, Rockefeller, and Harvard universities. In 1997 he received the National Medal of Science.


Fates
In Greek and Roman mythology, the three goddesses who determined human destiny. The Fates were usually depicted as old women: Clotho, the Spinner; Lachesis, the Allotter; and Atropos, the Inflexible. Clotho spun the thread of human life, Lachesis dispensed it, and Atropos cut the thread. They determined the length of each person's life as well as its share of suffering. Their Roman names were Nona, Decuma, and Morta.


Fides
Roman goddess of good faith and honesty, who oversaw the integrity of the Romans. She was closely associated with Jupiter, and her temple was built near his on the Capitoline Hill in 254 BC. In the later Roman period she was called Fides Publica ("Public Faith") and was considered the guardian of treaties and other state documents, which were placed in her temple for safekeeping.

Allergic skin reaction in which slightly raised, flat-topped, very itchy swellings appear suddenly. The acute form, probably most often caused by food allergies, subsides in 6-24 hours, but the chronic form, believed to be due to emotional and mental stress, lasts much longer.
