neutrality
Legal status arising from a country's abstention from all participation in a war between other countries, the maintenance of an attitude of impartiality toward the belligerents, and the recognition by the belligerents of this abstention and impartiality. In the past, rights of a neutral country included freedom of its territory from use or occupation by any warring party, maintenance of diplomatic relations with other neutrals and belligerents, freedom of its citizens to go about their business, and respect for its intent to be neutral. In the two world wars, many of the basic concepts of neutrality ceased to be respected; the freedom of the neutral was sharply reduced in the later 20th cent.
