bed
Piece of furniture on which a person may recline or sleep. Beds of simple construction appear in medieval manuscripts, as well as more decorative beds with carving and inlay, embroidered coverlets, and elaborate hangings. The canopy, or tester, was introduced in the 15th cent. In the 1820s, the development of coiled springs fitted into mattresses revolutionized the bed. In the Middle East, beds consisted of rugs piled up on the floor. In China, raised and canopied beds were used 2,000 years ago. The traditional Japanese bed (futon) consist of quilted padding and a coverlet arranged on the floor.
Leda
In Greek legend, the daughter of King Thestius of Aetolia and wife of King Tyndareus of Lacedaemon. Visited by Zeus in the form of a swan, she conceived Helen of Troy. Zeus was also sometimes said to be the father of her son Pollux, while Leda's own husband, Tyndareus, was held to be the father of his twin, Castor (see Dioscuri). Tyndareus was also the father of Leda's daughter Clytemnestra, who married Agamemnon.
Nejd
Region of central Saudi Arabia. Comprising a rocky plateau sloping eastward from the mountains of the Hejaz, it is sparsely settled, except for a few fertile oases. It became the center of the Wahhabi, a fundamentalist Islamic movement, in the mid-18th cent., which, by 1803 had expanded into Mecca. Nejd was captured by Ibn Saud c.1905. It was united with the Hejaz and became the independent kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.
Nemi
Crater lake in the Alban Hills, southeast of Rome, Italy. Its area is about 0.67 sq mi (1.7 sq km), and it is 110 ft (34 m) deep. Nearby were a temple and grove sacred to the goddess Diana. Two ships from the period of the emperor Caligula were raised from the bottom of the lake in the 1920s but were burned by the retreating German army in 1944.
nene
Species (Branta sandvicensis) of goose, the state bird of Hawaii. A close relative of the Canada goose, the nene is a nonmigratory, nonaquatic species with shortened wings and half-webbed feet. It is about 25 in. (65 cm) long and has a gray-brown barred body and black face. It feeds on berries and grasses on high lava slopes. Predation by introduced mammals (incl. dogs, cats, pigs, and mongooses) and human hunting had reduced the population to a few small flocks by 1911. It has since been successfully bred in captivity, but flocks released in the wild have failed to form self-sustaining colonies.
neon
Chemical element, chemical symbol Ne, atomic number 10. One of the noble gases, neon is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and completely unreactive.
