Agana
Town (pop., 1990: 1,100), capital of Guam. It lies on Guam's W coast on Agana Bay. A town of 10,000 in 1940, it was completely destroyed in World War II and has come back slowly. Nearby Latte Stone Park features pillars (latte stones) that supported houses of the prehistoric Latte culture.


Agartala
City (pop., 1991: 158,000), capital of Tripura state, India. It lies near the Bangladesh border on the Haroa River in an intensively cultivated plain. The commercial center of the area, it also contains a maharaja's palace, a temple, and four colleges affiliated with the Univ. of Calcutta.


agora
In ancient Greek cities, an open space serving as an assembly area and backdrop for commercial, civic, social, and religious activities. Use of the agora varied in different periods. Located in the middle of the city or near the harbor, it was often enclosed by public buildings, colonnades containing shops, and stoas for protection from sun and bad weather. The highest honor for a citizen was to be granted a tomb in the agora. See photo above.


Agra
City (pop., 1991: 892,000), W central Uttar Pradesh, India. It was founded by Sikander Lodi in the early 18th cent. on the Yumana River southeast of New Delhi, and was intermittently the Mughal capital. The city fell successively to the Jats and the Marathas in the late 18th cent., and finally to the British in 1803. It is the site of the Taj Mahal and the imperial palace of Akbar.


Ankara
City (pop., 1995: 2,838,000), capital of Turkey. Located about 220 mi (355 km) southeast of Istanbul on the Ankara River, it has been inhabited at least since the Stone Age. Conquered by Alexander the Great in 334 BC, it was incorporated into the Roman empire by Augustus. As a city of the Byzantine empire, Ankara fell to the Turks in 1073, but the crusader Raymond IV of Toulouse drove them out in 1101. In 1403 it came under Ottoman rule. After World War I, M. K. Atatü rk made Ankara the center of resistance to both the Ottomans and the invading Greeks, and it became the capital of Turkey in 1923. The city today is Turkey's chief industrial center after Istanbul. Its history is displayed in its Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman architecture and ruins and in its important historical museums.


cataract
Opacity of the eye's crystalline lens. Cataracts causing central visual-field defects are most likely to affect vision. Cataracts may occur in newborns and infants. Diabetes mellitus, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays, or trauma can cause them in adults, but they most often occur with age, resulting from gradual loss of transparency of the lens. Treatment is a surgical procedure to replace the lens with an artificial one.
