Acre
Seaport city (pop., 1993 est.: 44,000), NW Israel on the Mediterranean coast. First mentioned in an Egyptian text from the 19th cent. BC, it was ruled by Egyptians, Romans, Persians, and Arabs; under Phoenician rule it was called Ptolemais. It was a Syrian town under the Seljuq Turks when the crusaders captured it in 1104; the Crusaders renamed the city St. Jean d'Acre and made it their last capital (see Crusades). Except for brief intervals, it was under the rule of Ottoman Turks from 1516 until British forces took it in 1918. It was part of Palestine under the British mandate and became part of Israel in 1948. Notable structures include the Great Mosque and the Crypt of St. John.


Anacreon
Last great lyric poet of Asian Greece. Only fragments of his poetry have survived. Though he may have written serious poems, the poems quoted by later writers are chiefly in praise of love and wine. His sentiments and style were widely imitated, and the anacreontic meter in poetry was named for him.


Ares
Greek god of war. Unlike his Roman counterpart, Mars, his worship was not extensive. From the time of Homer, he was one of the Olympian deities, the son of Zeus and Hera, but disliked by the other gods. His worship occurred largely in N Greece. He was associated from early times with Aphrodite, occasionally portrayed as his legitimate wife and at other times his lover. He was accompanied in battle by his sister Eris (strife) and by two of his children by Aphrodite, Phobos and Deimos (Panic and Rout).


lacrosse
(Canadian French la crosse, "the crosier") Outdoor team sport in which players use a long-handled stick that has a triangular head with a mesh pouch for catching, carrying, and throwing a hard rubber ball with the object of slinging it into an opponent's goal (for one point). French settlers in Canada adapted the modern game from an ancient Amer. Indian event (baggataway) that was at once sport, combat training, and mystical ceremony. It became an organized sport in the late 19th cent. Modern teams have 10 players. The game is divided into four periods of 15 minutes each. Lacrosse is especially popular as a collegiate sport and is played by both men and women.


Lares
In Roman religion, guardian deities. Originally gods of cultivated fields, Lares were later worshiped in association with the Penates, the gods of the household. The household Lar, considered the center of the family cult, was often represented as a youthful figure holding a drinking horn and cup. Two Lares might be portrayed standing on either side of Vesta or some other deity. A prayer was said to the Lar or Lares every morning, and offerings were made at family festivals. Public Lares presided over local districts marked by a crossroad; state Lares (praestites), guardians of Rome, were worshiped in a temple on the Via Sacra.
