navaratri
In Hinduism, a nine-day festival followed on the 10th day by the Durga-puja. It includes feasting, visiting, public concerts, plays, and fairs. Durga's followers are especially numerous in Bengal and Assam; in other parts of India, the 10th day is associated with the victory of Rama over Ravana, acted out in a pageant climaxed by the burning of effigies of demons.


Ararat
Mountain, E Turkey. Located in Agri province, near the Iranian border, Ararat has two peaks, Great Ararat, at almost 17,000 ft (5,300 m) the highest in Turkey, and Little Ararat, almost 13,000 ft (4,000 m). Ararat is traditionally associated with the mountain where Noah's ark came to rest at the end of the biblical flood. A village on its slopes at the site where Noah is said to have built an altar was destroyed in an earthquake in 1840.


jacaranda
Any plant of the genus Jacaranda (family Bignoniaceae), especially the two ornamental trees J. mimosifolia and J. cuspidifolia. Jacarandas are grown widely in warm parts of the world and in greenhouses for their showy blue or violet flowers and attractive, oppositely paired, compound leaves. The genus includes about 50 species native to Central and S. America and the W. Indies. The name is also applied to several tree species of the genera Machaerium and Dalbergia in the pea family (see legume), the sources of commercial rosewood.


Nataraja
Shiva in his form as the cosmic dancer. The most common images show him with four arms and flying locks, dancing on a dwarf (a symbol of human ignorance) and encircled by a ring of flames. The Nataraja sculpture shows Shiva as the source of all movement within the cosmos, represented by the arch of flames. The dance's purpose is to release humans from illusion; the place where the god performs it is believed to lie both at the center of the universe and within the human heart.


Naucratis
Ancient Greek settlement, Egypt, in the Nile delta. It was founded in the 7th cent. BC and flourished as a center of trade and cultural relations between Greece and Egypt. It declined after Alexander the Great's conquest of Egypt and the founding of Alexandria in 332 BC. In 1884 F. Petrie discovered the site and helped excavate it.


Nayarit
State (pop., 1995 est.: 897,000), W central Mexico. Located on the Pacific Ocean, it has an area of 10,664 sq mi (27,620 sq km). The capital is Tepic. The Sierra Madre cuts the state's terrain into gorges and valleys. The volcanoes Ceboruco and Sangangü ey are notable, and the coastal lagoons are well-known bird refuges. The main river, Grande de Santiago, flowing from Lake Chapala, is sometimes considered a continuation of the Lerma River. Nayarit is primarily agricultural.
