callus
In botany, soft tissue that forms over a wounded or cut plant surface, leading to healing. A callus arises from cells of the cambium. When a callus forms, some of its cells may organize into growing points, some of which in turn give rise to roots while others produce stems and leaves. Thus a callus may be capable of regenerating an entire plant.
Nabis
(from Hebrew, navi, "prophet, seer") Group of French artists who paved the way for the development of abstract art in the early 20th cent. The Nabis preached that a work of art is the visual expression of an artist's synthesis of nature and his or her personal aesthetic. They were influenced by P. Gauguin and the Pont-Aven school, as well as by Japanese woodcuts, Symbolist painting, and the Pre-Raphaelites. Paul Sé rusier (1865-1927), the group's founder, painted the first Nabi work, Landscape at the Bois d'Amour at Pont-Aven (also called Talisman; 1888). Original members included P. Bonnard and E. Vuillard; a later member was A. Maillol.
Nabu
Major god in the Assyrian-Babylonian pantheon, the son of Marduk. He was patron of the art of writing and a god of vegetation. As the recorder of the fates assigned to humans by the gods, Nabu's symbols were the clay tablet and the stylus. His holy city was Borsippa. Goddesses associated with Nabu were Nana, a Sumerian deity; the Assyrian Nissaba; and the Akkadian Tashmetum.
Naples
City (metro. area pop., 1996 est.: 1,050,000) and capital, Campania, S Italy. Located on the N side of the Bay of Naples, southeast of Rome, it was founded c.600 BC by refugees from an ancient Greek colony; it was conquered by the Romans in the 4th cent. BC. Part of the realms of the Byzantines and then the Saracens, in the 11th cent. it was conquered by the Norman ruler of Sicily and through the 19th cent. it was the capital of the kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the kingdom of Naples. It was entered by G. Garibaldi's expedition in 1860. Heavily damaged in World War II by Allied and German bombing, it was later rebuilt, but suffered severe earthquake damage in 1980. It is a commercial and cultural center and a major port with diversified industries, incl. shipbuilding and textiles. Among the city's attractions are medieval castles, churches, and a university.
Paulus
German general in World War II. He became deputy chief of the German general staff in World War II, and commanded the German 6th Army in the Soviet Union. He was defeated in the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943, and the surrender of his army of 300,000 men ended Germany's offensive in Russia. While a prisoner, Paulus agitated against A. Hitler among the other German prisoners of war and later testified at the Nuremberg Trials. After his release from prison (1953), he settled in E. Germany.
